I love boba. It’s perfect no matter what time of the year, whether the weather be freezing cold or blazing hot. The sweet combination of Luckily, there has been a surge in popularity of boba milk tea, particularly in the Southern California area. To meet the surge in demand, there has been numerous boba houses popping up on every other block every other week. In order to find the best boba house in San Diego, we went around to the 5 most popular boba houses to find the king of all bobas.
In order to fairly judge the different boba houses we decided to get the most basic boba milk tea no matter where we went. The grading criteria is a maximum of 5 points each for the tea and boba for a total of 10 points. Let’s get started!
A relative new-comer to the San Diego boba scene, Dayung Tea has a vast menu that includes many different fruit teas. Despite heavily advertising their fruit tea, Dayung’s boba milk tea is very good. The milk tea has a nice balance of milk, tea, and sweetness. The boba was above average with a nice firm texture and a light sweetness.
Milk Tea: 4/5
Boba Bar and Desserts
One of the more trendy spots in San Diego, Boba Bar is well known for their soft and warm puffle cones. However, today it’s only about boba milk tea. Unfortunately, the milk tea wasn’t very impressive. The milk tea definitely had strong milk flavor but unfortunately it completely covered the taste of the tea. Also, the tea was a little more artificially sweet than I would have preferred. The boba was one of my least favorite out of the places that we visited.
Milk Tea: 3/5
Happy Lemon’s salted cheese float has been one of the most popular boba items in the San Diego area. Even their basic milk tea is tasty. The milk tea has a very nice nutty milky aftertaste. However, the texture and quality of the boba was lacking.
Milk Tea: 4/5
Kung Fu Tea
Kung Fu Tea’s boba milk tea has a floral taste that really makes it stand out from the other boba houses on this list. I wish the tea flavor was a little bit stronger, just a personal preference though! The boba also had the nice soft chewy texture.
Milk Tea: 4/5
Oo Tea (Wushiland)
Located in the 99 Ranch Market on Clairemont Mesa Blvd, Oo Tea’s appearance is rather low key. However, I would argue that Oo Tea has the best overall boba milk tea in San Diego. Their milk tea has an amazing balance of sweetness, milkiness, and tea flavor. I particularly like that the original tea flavor really shines through the milk. In addition, the boba is a soft chewy texture with a tinge of sweetness. The milk tea definitely reminds me of the milk tea I’ve had in Taiwan.
Milk Tea: 5/5
Wrapping up the San Diego boba house tour. The unanimous winner of the tour was Oo Tea! Their milk tea and boba are both 5/5, so definitely check them out if you haven’t already.
